This past week we muted our regular content so we could save space for the voices speaking out against racism. And while we sat listening and learning, we were taught some pretty disheartening facts about racism happening in the design industry. For instance, did you know that 73% of the design industry is white? Of the remaining percentage, 9% identified themselves as hispanic, 8% are asian and only 3% are black.
I believe a big reason the design industry is experiencing a lack of diversity is because of the racism that exists in our country. Just take a look at this article, for example. House Beautiful interviewed 39 black creatives that spoke out about their experiences with racism in the industry. It pains me to know that so many black entrepreneurs have struggled to make their dreams become a reality. Although starting a business is never easy, I have been so blinded to the privileges I already posses.
I also understand that this lack of color in design can be largely related to a lack of opportunity. That being said, I’m so glad I was able to come across the Black Interior Designers Network this week! Their mission is to promote diversity and inclusion within the interior design industry by highlighting designers of color. They also support black designers with business development opportunities. This is HUGE! Their pioneering nonprofit organization provides resources and business opportunities that allow black designers to flourish. In all, it’s time that we show our support for our fellow designers and home bloggers + give them the praise they deserve!
